Research by the Royal College of Nursing has found that hospitals and primary care trusts spent £350 million on advice from external companies, projects such as private finance initiatives, and attempts by hospitals to win foundation status and find ways to maximize income.

An interim manager could be a better bet than a full executive search, which might be costly, lengthy and not guaranteed to end in a permanent appointment. An interim might also be a better bet than bringing in the management consultants. A good interim manager will be part of the business, even during a short stay, in a way that a consultant never would be.
Interims are not managing their long-term careers within an organisation. They won't have had a typical career path themselves. "They aren't greasy pole climbers," Mr Robeson (Boyden) says. "They are not time-servers or political game-players."
